Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia endorsed City Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez for state Senate on Monday, Dec. 17.

Gonzalez, a Democrat, announced last week that she will run to represent District 33, which comprises much of southeast L.A. County, from Huntington Park down to Long Beach.

Current State Senator Ricardo Lara won his own bid to become California’s next insurance commissioner in the November midterms, leaving his Senate seat open. Lara has also endorsed Gonzalez for the job.

“I’ve worked with Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez for 10 years, and during that time she’s been my partner in expanding our fire and police departments, supporting small businesses, and fighting for the rights of all workers,” Garcia said in a statement. “She’s smart, independent, and will be a strong voice for Long Beach.”

For her part, Gonzalez said in a statement she is proud of the work she’s done with Garcia and happy to have his support.

“I am proud to be a leader with Mayor Garcia in moving our city forward,” she said. “We have worked to reduce homelessness, create affordable housing, and bring millions of dollars of resources to support our most vulnerable populations. I am excited to continue this partnership to ensure Long Beach and the cities along the 710 corridor get the resources they deserve.”
