CMSC’S 2020 Advocacy for Immigrant Mental Health Services
The CMSC is launching an initiative to advocate for immigrants’ mental health services, based on our 5-year experience relying upon group therapy sessions for the participants in our California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program, and the 3 Advance Parole Campaign advocacy trips to Washington, DC in 2019. This initiative intends to inform and educate the public regarding the psychological crisis affecting the immigrant population throughout the U.S., due to a pervasive state of fear generated by the Trump administration since coming into office in 2017, the targeted acts of violence as the August 3, 2019 El Paso, Texas mass shooting at a Walt Mart store, and the hate-crimes aimed against immigrants, Mexicans and Latinos. Therefore, this initiative will require the collaboration of mental health providers, social workers, and educators as volunteers to help us guide this effort towards providing specialized mental health services to immigrants. A short documentary about the Winter 2015 California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program. The documentary reflects the life-changing experiences of 30 undocumented students (DREAMERs), who had the opportunity to visit their country of birth Mexico, for the first time in over 20 years, and reconnect with their families and roots. They were able to fly to Mexico and come back to the U.S. through a special USCIS permit called Advance Parole. -
Sin Raiz (2015) Documentary
This is a short documentary about the lives of 14 undocumented students (also known as DREAMERs) whose parents brought them to the United States since a very young age, some of them living in the USA for over 20+ years, and through a Chicano Latino Studies class/program at the California State University Long Beach, these students had the chance to visit their home country for the very first time. They were able to fly to mexico and come back to the United States through a special USCIS permit called Advance Parole. They were excited to fly “home” for the first time, only to find a huge cultural shock which made them question their true identity. Follow them on this journey. CMSC’s 3rd Dreamers delegation advocate in DC on plight to restore DACA’s Advance Parole
The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC)’s 3rd phase of the National Campaign to Restore DACA’s Advance Parole was a great success! Over 40 DACA recipients from across the states joined us in Washington, D.C. from Nov. 9-15, 2019 to advocate for DACA and the restoration of Advance Parole. Participating Dreamers met with Representatives, Senators, and legislators and secured the commitment of at least 60 new signatures for a new congressional letter led by Rep. Lou Correa (CA-46) to be sent to President Donald Trump, DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf, and USCIS director Ken Cuccinelli II. In addition, half of our delegation had the opportunity to enter the DACA Supreme Court hearing and be part of this historical moment. During the rest of our advocacy days, we were able to engage in conversations with legislators about why Advance Parole should be restored and included in future legislation. Overall the success of this experience was measured by the community that was built within our participants and by the new letter that will be led by Rep. Lou Correa. -

CMSC helps 4 Dreamers lost in Mexico return to the U.S.
On July 21, 2019, four DACA recipients from Santa Ana, CA accidentally crossed the border as they tried to visit the San Diego Friendship Park to see their grandmother on the other side of the border. However, the missed their exit and ended up crossing the border to Tijuana. ERUSD Leader of the Ethnic Studies Revolution (2018)
On June 17, 2014, El Rancho Unified School District (ERUSD) made history by becoming the first school district in the state of California to adopt Ethnic Studies as a high school graduation requirement. This historic decision has placed ERUSD at the cutting-edge of promoting a global education for students and encouraged the largest school districts in California to follow ERUSD’s lead and adopt similar resolutions. ERUSD Leader of the Ethnic Studies Revolution (2018) is a documentary that chronicles ERUSD’s story behind their ethnic studies revolution, their unique approach to creating and implementing their 16+ ethnic studies classes, student voices, and the district’s long-term vision about developing a K-12 ethnic studies curriculum. The pioneering spirit of El Rancho Unified School District (ERUSD) reached another milestone on Friday July 1st, 2016, when the first college-credit summer Ethnic Studies class concluded, with a unique new model of instruction for 55 college-bound students at El Rancho High School (ERHS). In collaboration with the California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC) headed by professor Vazquez-Ramos, ERUSD Board President Aurora Villon introduced the Saturday College Ethnic Studies Classes model during the 2015 Spring semester, and has now created a teaching compact to match a college professor’s expertise on the subject matter, with the instructional experience of one of its own high school teachers. Dr.Joseph L. White Legacy Inaugural Lecture
The Inaugural Lecture to memorialize Dr. Joseph L. White’s life-long contributions to the field of psychology, his pioneering role establishing ethnic studies in the U.S., and as the founder of the CSULB Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) was an amazing success with about 100 of his colleagues, family members, faculty and students in attendance. As one of his closest disciples, Dr. Michael Connor delivered the Inaugural Lecture to celebrate Dr. White’s legacy and shared his teachings as the “Father of Black Psychology”, how he promoted the need for non-traditional treatment and understanding of ethnic minorities in mental health practices and how EOP has become a model replicated throughout California and the United States, allowing several generations of low-income students of color to graduate from public and private colleges and universities. Professor Armando Vazquez-Ramos pledged to continue to coordinate the annual lecture and pursue the goals of the Joseph L. White Legacy Project initiated in 2018 with many prominent EOP graduates, and to build upon the collaboration with the other co-sponsors of the event. These included the CSULB Psychology and Chicano & Latino Studies department, EOP and ASI. Cómo reacciona el gobierno de Mexico ante elección de Trump? – Primitivo Rodríguez Oceguera
Las élites políticas, económicas y sociales mexicanas, así como los medios de comunicación, analistas y académicos eran “Hillaristas”. Al igual que en Estados Unidos, el establishment mexicano tomó posición en contra de Trump. Públicamente esas élites se rasgaban las vestiduras por las amenazas que hacía Trump a México y sus migrantes: construir un muro en la frontera que México pagaría, y deportar a los millones de indocumentadas/os que trabajaban en Estados Unidos. En realidad las élites mexicanas manifestaban su hipocresía. ¿Dónde estaban cuando Bill Clinton inició la construcción del muro, o el “cierre” de la frontera, en 1994, lo que ha ocasionado desde entonces la muerte de más de 7,000 mujeres, hombres, niñas y niños migrantes? ¿Dónde andaban esas élites cuando el Capitolio, con la anuencia de Clinton, aprobó la ley de migración de 1996, la que criminalizó a las/os sin papeles, y estableció, entre otras cosas, que policías estatales y locales podrían colaborar con las autoridades migratorias pidiendo a sospechosas/os sus documentos de residencia o ciudadanía, o de lo contrario detenerlos y entregarlos a la migra? Ley ésta que dio origen a fanáticos xenófobos como el alguacil Joe Arpaio, y a leyes anti migrantes como la SB1070 de Arizona. ¿Qué hicieron tan indignadas élites durante los años en que Barack Obama deportó a más de millón y medio de mexicanas/os ganando el mote de Deporter in Chief? Si tanto les preocupa el bienestar de las/os migrantes, ¿qué presumirían dichas élites en cuanto a empleo, salud, educación y vivienda para esas mujeres y hombres deportados, incluyendo a hijas e hijos nacidos en Estados Unidos? En realidad los lloriqueos del establishment mexicano respondían no a su preocupación por las/os migrantes, sino a la amenaza de Trump de renegociar el Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC), o de plano abandonarlo. Tratado que benefició en grande a la burguesía mexicana, a gobernantes neoliberales, y a sus intelectuales orgánicos. ¿Qué planes tiene México para enfrentar las amenazas de Trump en caso de que se hagan realidad? Nada sustantivo o que sirva de protección a migrantes y a la nación. Por el contrario, el Estado reiterará con Trump la actitud de subordinación que México ha mostrado hacia Estados Unidos en los últimos años: S’órdenes, jefe. -

Kenia Duarte, one of the 35 #Dreamers that participated in the Summer 2016 California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program shares her testimony and experience after being able to return to her native Mexico after 19 years.
