The CMSC celebrates the Supreme Court’s ruling on DACA but Calls upon all to Dump Trump and the GOP Senate in November

While the Supreme Court’s unexpected decision to continue DACA deserves celebration, we must now prepare for Trump’s new attempt to kill the program and intensify our vigor to continue the fight against his re-election and his Senate GOP enablers.

Trump and his corrupt administration must be held accountable for the racism that has swept the U.S., and his inept management of the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused over 120,000 deaths, 45 million unemployed and economic devastation due to his“Make America Hate Again” mantra.

Let’s celebrate by creating a massive social movement to Dump Trump and the Republican Senate in November’s election !!!

Supreme Court rules for ‘Dreamers,’ rejects Trump’s repeal of immigration program

By: David G. Savage ~ Los Angeles Times ~ June 18, 2020

In a striking rebuke to President Trump, the Supreme Court on Thursday rejected his plan to repeal the popular Obama-era order that protected so-called Dreamers, the approximately 700,000 young immigrants who were brought to this country illegally as children.

Led by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., the court called the decision to cancel the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, arbitrary and not justified. The program allows these young people to register with the government and, if they have a clean criminal record, to obtain a work permit. At least 27,000 of these DACA recipients are employed as healthcare workers.

Trump had been confident that the high court, with its majority of Republican appointees, would rule in his favor and say the chief executive had the power to “unwind” the policy.

The decision follows several other defeats this week for Trump. On Monday, the court rejected the Trump administration’s position that a 1964 civil rights law should not protect LGBTQ workers from discrimination, and separately it sided with California in a legal battle over so-called... Read full article here

Trump Can’t Immediately End DACA, Supreme Court Rules

No alt text provided for this image

By: Adam Liptak and Michael D. Shear ~ The New York Times ~ June 18, 2020

The program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, protects people brought to the United States as children by shielding them from deportation and letting them work.

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the Trump administration may not immediately proceed with its planto end a program protecting about 700,000 young immigrants known as Dreamers from deportation.

The court’s ruling was a blow to one of President Trump’s central campaign promises — that as president he would “immediately terminate” an executive order by former President Barack Obama that Mr. Trump had called an illegal executive amnesty for hundreds of thousands of young immigrants.

Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote the majority opinion, joined by the court’s four more liberal members in upholding the program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA... Read full article here

Americans broadly support legal status for immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children

By: Jens Manuel Krogstad ~ Pew Research Center ~ June 17, 2020

About three-quarters of U.S. adults say they favor granting permanent legal status to immigrants who came illegally to the United States when they were children, with the strongest support coming from Democrats and Hispanics, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted June 4-10, 2020.

As the U.S. Supreme Court weighs the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (or DACA), 74% of Americans favor a law that would provide permanent legal status to immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children, while 24% are opposed. As with other immigration issues, some of the sharpest differences in these views are between Democrats and Republicans. While 91% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents favor granting legal status to immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children, about half of Republicans and Republican leaners (54%) say the same... Read full article here

California Judge Blocks DeVos Rule Banning DACA Students From Stimulus

By: Wesley Whistle ~ Forbes ~ June 17, 2020

Another judge has blocked Education Secretary from enforcing her CARES Act guidance. Today, U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers granted an injunction, blocking the Department of Education from enforcing their CARES Act guidance against California community colleges.

The CARES Act provided money for colleges and universities to provide emergency grants to students when the coronavirus pandemic shuttered college campuses across the country. In April, DeVos issued guidance that said students must be eligible for federal student aid to receive emergency grant aid from the CARES Act.

This decision was criticized by many as it seemed to be targeted at undocumented students, such as those participating in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

California Community Colleges filed suit in May against the Department over the guidance. The suit claimed that the Secretary was “arbitrarily placing eligibility restrictions on emergency relief funds... Read full article here

Emergency Grant Limit Blocked in Washington State

By: Kery Murakami ~ Inside Higher Ed ~ June 15, 2020

A federal judge in Washington State has blocked the Education Department's rule limiting which college students are eligible for emergency grants but left in place a ban on undocumented students getting the aid.

A mixed ruling by a federal judge in Washington State dealt a limited blow to U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’s contention that only those college students eligible for regular student aid are able to get emergency grants Congress created in the CARES Act.

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas O. Rice granted a preliminary injunction that, for now, gives Washington State colleges and universities broader latitude in handing out the grants Congress created to help students whose lives were disrupted by campus closures during the coronavirus pandemic. Institutions in the state were apportioned $113 million of the $12 billion in emergency grants in the stimulus relief package to help students pay for pay for necessities like food and housing... Read full article here

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s Democratic appointees in a 5-4 decision.

The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to end the DACA program, handing a major victory to about 650,000 immigrants — most of whom who entered the U.S. illegally as children more than a decade ago.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s Democratic appointees in a 5-4 decision that found the Trump administration’s move to wind down the Obama-era program for Dreamers lacked a sound... Read full article here

Fiscal policy has more immediate effect, Fed chairman says

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Tuesday urged Congress to spend more money to limit the economic damage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the latest in a chorus of current and past Fed officials to tell lawmakers that inaction could lengthen the recession.

“There’s a reasonable probability that more will be needed both from you, and from the Fed,” Powell told the Senate Banking Committee, echoing nudges he has made in nearly every public statement since the pandemic began. Powell has noted that COVID-19’s economic devastation has fallen hardest on low-income workers — 40 percent of individuals making under $40,000 lost their jobs during the crisis... Read full article here
