Celebrate with us the 50th Anniversary of Chicano Studies at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte

The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC), El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (El Colef), San Diego State University (SDSU) and the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT) are pleased to invite you to the International Conference Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of Chicano Studies. The conference will focus on the origin of the Chicano Movement and the implementation of Chicano Studies programs in 1969, the importance of teaching Chicano and Latino Studies in the United States and Mexico, as well as promote a comparative analysis of the scope of this movement in both countries.

OBJECTIVE

  • Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ‘El Plan of Santa Barbara’ and the creation of Chicano Studies programs in September 1969, through the plan’s model and Chicano student leadership. The purpose is to contextualize the experience and political struggle of Chicano youth for the recognition of their rights.
  • Present a program with academic reflections on artistic and cultural movements of the Chicano community and its impact upon Mexico and the United States.
  • Present about the Mexican diaspora and the relevance of Chicano Studies teaching in Mexico and the North American region.
  • Pay tribute to outstanding figures who have participated in history as leaders, academics and artists of the Chicano community in the United States.
  • Promote collaboration and academic exchange between institutions of higher education and cultural organizations between California and Mexico.

The conference will be webcast live for those who cannot attend. But if you plan to participate please register and/or contact Professor Armando Vazquez-Ramos at armando.vazquez-ramos@csulb.edu and provide your information in order to be sent an invitation and information about hotel accommodations and meals.

Participants in attendance will not be required to pay any registration fees.

Celebra el 50 Aniversario de la Creación de Estudios Chicanos en El Colef

El Centro de Estudios California-México (CMSC), El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (El Colef), San Diego State University (SDSU) y el Centro Cultural de Tijuana (CECUT) se complacen en invitar a la Conferencia del 50 Aniversario de la Creación de Estudios Chicanos, que se dará a cabo en El Colef en Tijuana, B.C., México del 10 al 12 de Octubre 2019.

La conferencia se centrará en el origen del movimiento Chicano y la creación de programas universitarios sobre Estudios Chicanos a partir de 1969 en las universidades de Estados Unidos, así como la importancia de la enseñanza de Estudios Chicanos y Latinos en Estados Unidos y México, promoviendo un análisis comparativo de los alcances de este movimiento en ambos países.

OBJECTIVO

  • Conmemorar el 50º aniversario de El Plan de Santa Barbara y la creación de los programas de Estudios Chicanos iniciados en Septiembre de 1969, por medio del modelo del plan y el liderazgo estudiantil Chicano. La finalidad es contextualizar la experiencia y lucha política de las y los jóvenes Chicanos por el reconocimiento de sus derechos.
  • Presentar un programa con reflexiones académicas sobre movimientos artísticos y culturales de la comunidad Chicana y su impacto en México y Estados Unidos.
  • Exponer sobre la diáspora mexicana y la pertinencia de la enseñanza de Estudios Chicanos en México y la región de América del Norte. Brindar homenaje a destacadas figuras que han participado en la historia como líderes, académicos y artistas de la comunidad Chicana en Estados Unidos.
  • Promover la colaboración e intercambio académico entre instituciones de educación superior, de cultura y las artes de California y México.

If you missed last week's video featuring Mayra Garibo, you can watch it here.On this second episode, we will feature Areli Navarro's story, one of the 14 pioneering unDACAmented students who participated in the first California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program in the Spring of 2015. She will be sharing her personal experience after having the unique opportunity to visit her family in Mexico and reconnect with her roots. She will also share about the impact Advance Parole had in her life. Moreover, Areli is also one of the featured students in Sin Raiz (2015), a short film that documented the binational experiences of the 14 students.
