LOS ANGELES, California. - Mexicans must be recognized for their value not only for the economy of California, but for their economic contributions throughout the United States, as considered by the eventual presidential candidate and coordinator of the Defense of the Fourth Transformation, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum visited Los Angeles and spoke with Univision 34 about fundamental issues in terms of Mexico's relationship with the United States: migration, economy and security.

Mexicans are valuable to the United States economy

The eventual candidate of the so-called Fourth Transformation considered that the pillar of the relationship between Mexico and the United States in immigration issues has to start with the treatment with dignity of Mexicans who live on this side of the border.

He recognized that this relationship of dignity must also come from the government of Mexico, because for decades and with other governments prior to that of the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, migrants were not recognized with the relevance they deserve.

In this sense, the eventual candidate of the Mexican left pointed out that part of this treatment with dignity also has to do with the recognition that from California and throughout the United States is made of the contribution they make every day to the US economy.

"Mexicans and Mexicans who live, not only in California, but in the United States, not only have a fundamental weight for Mexico's economy because of the remittances they send, but they have a fundamental role in the United States economy," he said.

"And this is what we want to be recognized, that's why it is essential for us that Mexicans living in the United States be treated with dignity and insist on what immigration reform represents," Sheinbaum added to an express question from Univision 34.

Development is key for Mexico and the United States

In terms of immigration, the eventual 4T candidate not only mentioned the importance of immigration reform, but also drew her vision on how the situation on the southern border with Mexico should be addressed.

He explained that it is necessary to promote and strengthen what he called a "development cooperation," as a strategy to reduce migratory flows from Mexico to the north, but also from the countries of Central America.

"To prevent the migration from continuing," Sheinbaum said.

Mexico is safer than the United States: Sheinbaum

In terms of security, Sheinbaum said that notoriously progress has been made in improving the crisis of violence that affected many Mexican cities in recent years; however, he acknowledged that there are still pending in some areas of the country.

To the express question about whether she considered, like President López Obrador, that Mexico is safer than the United States, the 4T candidate nodded and gave as an example Mexico City, of which she commented, has a homicide rate per 100 inhabitants lower than "several cities" in the United States.

Sheinbaum pointed out that it is necessary to continue with the work that has been done to end crime and insecurity in Mexico, but with a different strategy from the one that the governments prior to the so-called 4T took.

"We can't go back to the war against drug traffic, because what it caused is what we have now. (...) What we have now is a different vision, of embracing young people, of giving them opportunities and of continuing to fight crime," he said.

Claudia Sheinbaum participated in a media meeting this Saturday in Los Angeles, as part of a visit to Southern California.
