Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving

The CMSC Team and the 83 Dreamers participating in our Winter 2020 Study Abroad Program want to wish everyone a safe and healthy Thanksgiving Holiday week.

Despite the challenging times of a year-long pandemic and the 4-year Trump nightmare:

  • We are thankful for being alive and for the creator’s blessings
  • We celebrate the election of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris
  • We are grateful for them bringing an end to Trump’s era of hate and racism in the United States
  • We cherish the lives of more than 250,000 casualties and 12.5 million infected by COVID-19 in the U.S.
  • We are optimistic and rejoice with a bright future for the U.S. and the world despite the millions infected and killed by the pandemic
  • We are hopeful for the dawn of a new civil rights movement to end all forms of discrimination in the U.S. and the world
  • We look forward to the release of all caged immigrant children and reunifying them with their parents and families in the U.S.
  • We plea for an inclusive immigration reform with a path to citizenship for all undocumented workers and families in the U.S.
  • We celebrate the restoration of DACA as originally established in 2012 and our success restoring DACA’s Advance Parole

Most important, we celebrate and appreciate the support that we have received from our sponsors and donors for our past and future Dreamers’ Study Abroad programs !!!

The global impact of the U.S. 2020 elections, from a world-systems perspective

By Professor Gonzalo Santos, Op-Ed for El Magonista ~ Nov. 22, 2020

In this second commentary on the 2020 U.S. elections, I will assess the world impact it will have in the immediate, median, and long terms, with some remarks on the future of U.S.-Mexico relations. For my first commentary, where I focus on the election's domestic aspects, go here.

We must always analyze world-historic events - which Fernand Braudel dismissed, important as they may be, as "dust" in comparison with the structural evolution of the system of historical capitalism in the longue durée - in three time frames to better understand their meaning: their relationship to and impact on the moment they happen in the long life of the world-system; their relationship to and impact on the shorter cyclical patterns of the system, such as the A/B Kondratieff economic cycles of global prosperity and contraction, or the three cycles of global hegemony thus far (Dutch, British, and American) in the interstate system; and finally, the analysis of the proximate causes which gave rise to them in the conjuncture, as well as the immediate effects these events may have... Read Full Article

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to advocate for the California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program

No alt text provided for this image

The office of Senator and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has agreed to advocate for the expedited approval of all I-131 Advance Parole applications from Winter 2020 California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program participants.

The California-Mexico Studies Center (CMSC) has launched a new fund drive initiative from November 1 to December 31, 2020 to solicit sponsors and grants in support of the Winter 2020 California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program, which will allow 85 DACA recipients to travel to Mexico with DACA’s Advance Parole permit, immerse in a unique U.S.-Mexico national security study abroad program, and reconnect with their family and cultural roots.

All participants have a pending Advance Parole (I-131) application since August 31, 2020, subject to USCIS approval and the CMSC team is working diplomatically with Mexico’s government and the U.S. Homeland Security Administration to secure authorization for all 85 participants.

But we need to raise about $50,000 to cover the increased costs of the program and ensure the safety of all participants while traveling in Mexico during the pandemic. The additional costs are related to increased expenses due doubling the cost for single-room hotel accommodations and all transportation costs due to social-distancing, COVID-19 pre- and post-testing, and 24/7 medical attention and prevention protocols.

Thus, we urge our community, Dreamers’ supporters, corporate and business sponsors, community and church groups, and academic colleagues to help us raise $50,000 by the end of the year with donations of any amount, or by sponsoring at least one Dreamer participant at $500 each.

By: Bart JansenDeirdre ShesgreenUSA TODAY – Nov. 23, 2020

Biden selected Alejandro Mayorkas to become the first immigrant and first Latino to lead the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees immigration policy and border security among its vast portfolio. The department has been one of the most contentious arenas in the federal government as President Donald Trump sought to tighten border security, reduce refugee admissions, increase deportations and build a larger wall along the border with Mexico.

Mayorkas, a Cuban American who arrived with his parents as refugees from Fidel Castro's regime in 1960, has been deputy secretary of the department and headed its citizenship agency... Read Full Article
