The Summer 2017 California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program now taking place at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte

The first group of Dreamers, participants of the CMSC's Summer 2017 California-Mexico Dreamers Study Abroad Program, are now taking a special course for Mexican citizens living in the United States taught by Dr. Jorge Bustamante at El Colegio de la Frontera Norte.

Prior to taking the course at COLEF, participating Dreamers had the opportunity to conduct independent travels and  ethnographic research on their family origins, which allowed them to visit their birthplace. Moreover, they will participate and present their ethnographic research findings at the upcoming 2nd International Seminar on Migration and Public Policy this Thursday and Friday August 17-18, 2017 at COLEF.

The second group of Dreamers whom are currently doing their independent travel and ethnographic research in their respective home-states, will join the program tomorrow and participate in the seminar and scheduled activities.

We anticipate the CMSC Dreamers returning through the crossing at the PedWest entry in San Ysidro at noon on Monday August 21st , and we invite family, friends, and supporters to join us and to celebrate the return of the 35 courageous California-Mexico Dreamers at the Outlets at the Border at the Camino de la Plaza exit on Highway 5, just before crossing the border.

HAPPENING THIS WEEK AT EL COLEF:

The CMSC-COLEF's 2nd International Seminar on Migration and Public Policy

( Seminar will be streamed live )

The California-Mexico Studies Center, in collaboration with El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (COLEF), will be hosting the 2nd International Seminar on Migration and Public Policy this week, from  August 17-19, 2017 at COLEF's main campus in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

The seminar will be held as part of COLEF's 35th anniversary celebration of its founding. Also, the seminar will focus on issues relating to the current situation of Dreamers on both sides of the border, the migration of close to 1 million U.S.-citizen minors forced into exile in Mexico and Central America with their deported parents, as well as the tragedy of  separated families and deported U.S. military veterans.

Moreover, the seminar will serve as ground for discussion and presentations by students, academics, activists, elected officials and representatives from Mexico and and the U.S., including keynotes by Dr. Jorge Bustamante, Ambassador Carlos Sada Solana, Chicano Artist Malaquías Montoya, and U.S. Rep. Lou Correa.

Download the Seminar Program Schedule for more information.

The seminar will culminate with a field research and cultural program on Saturday August 19, 2017.  The field research is intended to give seminar attendees the opportunity to participate in an educational trip to the U.S.-Mexico border and visit various shelters and organizations that advocate for immigrants, deportees and refugees in Tijuana.

The cultural program at the end of the day will be the official culmination of the seminar, which will take place at the Centro Cultural de Tijuana (CECUT), with a reception organized by Dr. Alfredo Hernandez Hernandez, president of COLEF, followed by a special presentation by Gregorio Luke of the 2015 film "Desierto", directed by Jonás Cuarón and starring Gael Garcia. In addition, there will be a photographic display by photojournalist Don Bartletti.

The entire seminar will be streamed live here. The CMSC is pleased to invite our newsletter readers to tune in online or to register to attend the seminar. However, due to limited space, attendance will be by invitation only after you register. If you would like to be invited to attend, please register here.
