The CMSC advocates for AMLO to plea for Trump to free all detained minors, re-open DACA and a COVID-19 plan for the Americas

Since Mexico’s president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has agreed to visit Donald Trump, despite the advice from several prominent figures and the loud opposition from the 40 million Mexicans that reside in the U.S., the CMSC has officially requested for him and Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard in a letter today, to advocate for the following agreements during their meeting:

  1. That president Trump follows the Supreme Court’s order to release all immigrant minors detained by the U.S. and the reunification with their parents in the U.S. immediately;
  2. That president Trump follows the Supreme Court’s order to re-establish the DACA program, allowing for thousands of eligible applicants that have been denied DACA protection since September 5, 2017, and to approve Advance Parole travel authorization for Dreamers to study abroad, for employment opportunities and expedited approval for humanitarian reasons when relatives are critically ill or facing imminent death. After 2 weeks since the court’s order, Trump and USCIS officials continue threaten another attempt to kill the DACA program and to defy the June 18, 2020 Supreme Court order.
  3. That both presidents reverse their inept response to the Coronavirus crisis and exercise leadership by agreeing to establish a long-term continental plan to abate the COVID-19 pandemic, in collaboration with all nations in the Americas.

Both presidents have a chance to make this questionable meeting more than a political photo-opportunity by addressing key policy issues of great importance.

Leer Mas

Leer Mas

Visita de AMLO: trampa de Trump

No alt text provided for this image

No alt text provided for this image

Leer Mas

Why the United States needs a plan for the Coronavirus in the Americas

No alt text provided for this image

By Trevor SuttonDan Restrepo, and Joel Martinez  Center for American Progress – May 5, 2020

The coronavirus pandemic is challenging the capabilities and resources of governments around the world, and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are no exception. The region’s widespread poverty, weak health infrastructure, and fragile economies mean its residents could suffer greatly if political leaders do not act swiftly to mitigate the crisis. To date, countries’ responses have varied from strict lockdown measures to relaxed approaches lacking urgency to outright denial. Of particular concern, the two most populous Latin American countries—Brazil and Mexico—have been the slowest to mobilize to contain the spread of the virus. In Venezuela, meanwhile, the pandemic has begun magnifying an already horrific humanitarian situation.

Although the United States faces an escalating health crisis at home, it cannot afford to ignore the progressing spread of COVID-19 among its neighbors in the Americas. Many countries in the region are closely linked to the United States economically, politically, and with regard to movement of peoples. The uncontrolled spread of the novel coronavirus in the region is likely to hamper the United States’ efforts to contain the pathogen, impede domestic economic recovery, and intensify the political instability and human suffering that have contributed to high levels of forced migration in recent years... Read More

The most oppressed minority in the United States and in the Americas has always been and continues to be Native Americans

 By: Dr. Frank Garcia Berumen

The recent protests related to the death of George Floyd have re-ignited the indignation of the long history of racism in the United States. The media coverage, policy commentaries, and demonstrations, have focused on the racism against African-Americans. However, racism is just not just an African-American experience and issue, but one experienced by every ethnic group. Long before the arrival of African-Americans, Europeans invaders had and have continued to vent, their most horrendous policies of racism and annihilation against Native Americans. However, the nation lives in a permanent state of historical amnesia in regards to the plight of indigenous peoples.

The oppression of Native Americans by Europeans began the first day that Christopher Columbus landed in the American continent on October 21, 1492, in the island of Guanahani (the Taino name), which today is part of the Bahamas. The native people who occupied this island were the Arawak, Taino, and Lucayan. Columbus and his men set about enslaving them, raping the women, stealing their valuables, and taking over the lands through murder, pillage, and plunder. Europeans also brought diseases such as smallpox, bubonic plague, chickenpox, cholera, etc. which killed millions. The brutal policy of the Spanish in the Caribbean resulted in the extinction of indigenous people in the area within twenty years... Read More
