A revamped ACLU takes on today's fights, Hamilton mixtape on immigrants, and more ~ Newsletter June 29, 2017

In the days leading up to 9/11, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)conceived of a 10-year plan to expand the capacity of its affiliates nationwide. Now that initiative is notching successes as the organization nets record donations to confront the threats of a Trump presidency. How did the nation's leading defender of constitutional rights do it?

On January 27, 2017, President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning the citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. The ACLU was at the ready with legal arguments against such a move and, together with its allies, immediately mobilized a challenge. Meanwhile, thousands of Americans flocked to major airports across the country to protest the ban and to demand the release of hundreds of detained travelers.

One day after the ban went into effect, a federal judge granted the ACLU's request for an emergency hearing, blocking the deportations and ordering customs officials to provide a list of individuals who had been detained as a result of the ban. The Hamilton Mixtape: Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)

New 'Hamilton Mixtape' Music Video Takes Aim at Immigration.

A music video released on Wednesday for "Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)," a song off "Hamilton Mixtape," is replete with stark political imagery and not-so subtle messaging targeting President Trump's rhetoric on immigration.

"Hamilton Mixtape" is an album of covers sung by mainstream artists including Alicia Keys and Usher, inspired by the Broadway musical-turned-cultural phenomenon "Hamilton" and released shortly after the presidential election in 2016. The song "Immigrants," performed by K'naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC (known to film audiences as Riz Ahmed) and Residente, is the first from the album to spur a music video.
